The Story Narrative (Hinglish Prose)

Complete Story

Arjun aaj office se seedha ghar nahi, seedha ek trial court mein ghusa hai — jahan judge bhi hai, jury bhi hai, aur dono taraf se ek hi sentence repeat ho raha hai: “Arjun, tumne yeh kiya ya nahi?” Small dining room mein warm bulb jal raha hai, sideboard ke paas decorative lamp flicker kar rahi hai, aur table itna chhota hai ki normal dinner bhi Olympic event lag raha hai. Ek extra chair corner mein rakhi hai, jaise kisi ne pehle hi decide kar liya ho ki is raat kisi ka ego yahin baithne wala hai.

Arjun, office formals mein, apni reusable water bottle ko aise pakde hai jaise woh shield ho. Uski wife Nisha comfy home wear mein hai, teekhi aankhon aur halka sa smug smile ke saath. Saamne Meera, bright sari mein, reading glasses naak ke neeche tikaye, aise baithi hai jaise family dinner nahi, performance review chal raha ho. Har innocent line ek trap ban jaati hai. “Arjun, chair khud le aaye?” — “Arjun, napkin kaun dega?” — “Arjun, paani kahan rakha?” Nisha har baar ek step ahead, Meera har baar ek step zyada dangerous. Arjun bas smile karta hai, chair ko thoda aage karta hai, phir peeche, phir side mein, aur phir accidentally extra chair se takra kar khud hi extra ho jaata hai.

Dinner ke beech tension aur comedy ka perfect mix banta hai. Meera Arjun ko “successful son-in-law” mode mein dekhna chahti hai: polite, helpful, presentable, aur thoda sa impressive. Nisha use “obedient husband” mode mein dekhna chahti hai: ghar ka aadmi, jo bina bole samajh jaaye, napkin pass kare, bowl uthaye, aur galti se bhi hero banne ki koshish na kare. Arjun dono ko satisfy karne ke chakkar mein har cheez ulta karta hai — spoon ko water bottle se saaf kar deta hai, serving bowl ko apni taraf kheench leta hai, napkin ko tablecloth samajh ke fold kar deta hai, aur phone ko “silent” karne ke bajaye khud silent ho jaata hai. Har action pe dono women ek dusre ko dekhkar muskurati hain, jaise unke beech koi secret competition chal raha ho.

Phir twist aata hai. Meera casually bolti hai ki usne Arjun ke liye “chores list” banayi thi — bas dekhna tha ki kitna responsible hai. Nisha turant bolti hai ki list usne bhi banayi thi, kyunki “mummy ko laga hoga main kuch zyada hi pampering kar rahi hoon.” Dono lists same nikalti hain: chair sahi jagah rakhna, napkin fold karna, paani serve karna, spoon count karna, phone silent karna, aur dinner ke baad bowl sink tak le jaana. Arjun stunned. Woh sochta hai ki ab toh uska score zero hoga. Lekin reveal aur funny hai: woh inmein se ek bhi kaam correctly nahi karta, phir bhi dono usse pass kar deti hain.

Kyun? Kyunki Arjun ne poori raat ek bhi complaint nahi ki. Na bhaaga, na jhallaaya, na excuse diya. Usne extra chair ko quietly adjust kiya, dono ke beech space banaya, aur jab dono uspar chhoti-chhoti taunts maar rahi thi, usne bas unke words ko “serving bowls” ki tarah sambhal liya. Meera accepts that he is not a show-off. Nisha accepts that he is not trying to win by force. Aur Arjun finally samajh jaata hai ki is dinner ka real test chores nahi tha — patience tha.

Last beat mein Meera extra chair ko apne paas kheench kar kehti hai, “Aaj se yeh chair yahin rahegi.” Nisha turant bolti hai, “Mummy, chair ki zaroorat nahi, Arjun already extra careful ho gaya hai.” Arjun, relieved, pehli baar genuinely laugh karta hai. Decorative lamp flicker karti hai. Table pe serving bowls thoda sa settle ho jaate hain. Aur audience ko pata chalta hai ki is ghar mein pyaar ka sabse bada sign perfect answers nahi, balki galat answers ke beech bhi dinner complete kar lena hai.
