The Strictness Behind the Silence
Report card week aaya. School ka atmosphere aur bhi formal ho gaya—teachers ke faces serious, students ke whispers low. Principal Mr. Nair, jo hamesha polished shoes aur calm voice ke saath ghoomte the, unka mood bhi extra policy-driven tha. Unhe school ki image ka bahut khayal tha. Discipline, results, reputation—yeh unki duniya thi. Ussi din Rohan kisi ka signed form dhoondhte-dhoondhte Sister Bernadette ke office mein ghus gaya. Office mein files ki smell, old paper, aur ek table fan ki slow hum—poora scene hi aisa tha jaise secrets yahin rehte honge. Bernadette madam kisi student ke admission papers mein busy thi. “Ek minute, beta,” unhone bina upar dekhe bola. “Aur kuch mat chhedna. Yeh office hai, playground nahi.”
Rohan ne wait karte hue side table par rakhi ek open file dekh li. Uski nazar automatically ek entry par atak gayi—hostel fee payment, amount, date, signature. Aur signature ke corner mein likha tha: A. D’Souza. Rohan ka dil ek second ko ruk sa gaya.
Usne file ko aur carefully padha. Wahan clear tha ki payment anonymous nahi thi. Miss Anjali ne apni pension ka part use karke Rohan ki dues bhari thi. Bernadette ke notes mein bhi mention tha: “Teacher requested confidentiality.” Rohan ko laga uske pair zameen se alag ho gaye hain. Woh jo teacher usse cold, strict, unreachable lagti thi—woh apni pension ka hissa quietly kisi bachche ke liye nikaal rahi thi. File mein ek aur note tha: Miss Anjali ne extra tuitions bhi refuse ki thi, apni rented room mein simple life jeeti thi, aur apne personal expenses cut karke kuch students ke liye emergency support rakhti thi. Rohan ke gale mein kuch atak gaya.
Bernadette ne uski expression dekh li. Wahan unhone pehli baar soft voice mein kaha, “She didn’t want you to know.” “Why?” Rohan ki awaaz bahut low thi. “Because sometimes help loses its purity when it asks for applause.” Rohan ne file band kar di, jaise uske haath mein garam cheez thi. Usse suddenly samajh aaya ki jis cheez ko woh insult samajh raha tha, woh actually ek bridge thi. Miss Anjali ne usse bachaya nahi tha in a dramatic way. Unhone bas itna kiya tha ki woh gir na jaaye. Aur woh bhi bina kisi credit ke.
Us raat hostel room mein Rohan ne neend nahi li. Dim light mein ceiling ko dekhte hue usko yaad aaya kaise Miss Anjali hamesha “full sentence” bolne ko kehti thi. Kaise woh late submission pe stern hoti thi. Kaise woh class mein kisi ko beech mein bolne nahi deti thi. Tab usne socha—shayad strictness ka ek aur side hota hai. Shayad unki harshness uss care ka disguise thi jo woh openly dikhana nahi chahti thi. Rohan ne pehli baar apne aap se honestly kaha: main help lene se nahi, help ke meaning se darr raha tha. Mujhe lagta tha agar kisi ne mujhe support diya, toh main kamzor ho jaunga. But maybe support ka matlab weakness nahi hota. Maybe woh bas ek haath hota hai, jo tumhe dobara khade hone deta hai.
Next day, Rohan Miss Anjali ke class ke baad unke desk ke paas gaya. Class khatam ho chuki thi, bachche bahar nikal rahe the, corridor mein distant laughter aur shoes ke sounds aa rahe the. Miss Anjali apni register close kar rahi thi. “Ma’am,” Rohan ne dheere se kaha. Unhone upar dekha. “Yes?” Rohan ne ek deep breath li. “I saw the file.” Miss Anjali ka face still tha, but unki fingers register ke edge par ek second ke liye freeze ho gayi. “Then you know.” “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because it was not about telling you.” Rohan ne ek second ke liye apni aankhen neeche kar li. “I thought… I thought you were making me feel small.” Miss Anjali ka expression first time visibly soften hua, just a little. “I know.” Bas do words. But unmein bahut kuch tha.
Rohan ki voice thodi shaky ho gayi. “I’m sorry, ma’am.” Miss Anjali ne immediately kaha, “Don’t apologize with drama. Apologize by doing better.” Rohan almost hansa. First time, genuinely. Phir Miss Anjali ne apni bag se kuch papers nikale—scholarship forms, hostel support application, aur school ke principal ke sign ke liye ek draft request. “Mr. Nair has agreed to start a formal student aid process,” she said. “No one should depend on hidden sacrifices forever.” Rohan ne un papers ko dekha. “You talked to him?” “Of course I did.” “Was he okay with it?” Miss Anjali’s mouth twitched, almost a smile. “He likes clean records. I gave him a cleaner solution.”
A week later, principal office mein formal meeting hui. Mr. Nair calm the, but unki eyes mein calculation thi. Sister Bernadette files ke saath ready thi, Mrs. Prabha bhi present thi, kyunki hostel students ke real conditions ka data unke paas hota tha. Mrs. Prabha ne bluntly bola, “Aap log policy ke notes dekhte ho. Main bacchon ki aankhen dekh ke batati hoon kaun meal skip kar raha hai.” Bernadette ne papers tap karte hue add kiya, “And I can make the paperwork work, if everyone stops pretending no one has ever needed flexibility.” Mr. Nair ne ek lambi saans li. “Fine. We’ll formalize it. But discreetly.” Miss Anjali ne bas ek nod diya. Unke liye yeh victory loud nahi thi. Bas necessary thi.
