The Accidental Spotlight

The Accidental Spotlight

Aarav Mehta

Aarav Mehta ka Thursday subah kuch zyada hi intense tha. Quarter-end review call tha, jo company mein har baar “quick sync” ke naam par shuru hoti thi aur ending tak ek emotional endurance test ban jaati thi. Aarav apne one-bedroom flat ke living room mein khada tha, phone ek taraf rakha hua, aur mirror ke saamne full-on practice mode mein tha.

“Good morning everyone, hope you’re doing well,” usne corporate smile ke saath bola, phir turant hi apne shoulders loose kiye. “Nahi, nahi. Too stiff.”

Phir usne ek random dance step kiya. Pehle left, phir right, phir ek awkward shoulder roll jo dekhne mein aisa lag raha tha jaise kisi ne office chair pe current laga diya ho. Aarav ko lagta tha dance karne se stress nikalta hai. Aur honestly, aaj stress nikalna zaroori tha, kyunki uska manager pehle hi two times calendar invite resend kar chuka tha.

Usne apne laptop ki taraf dekha. Camera off tha. Mic muted tha. Ya usse aisa lag raha tha.

“Bas do minute,” Aarav ne khud se kaha. “Call start hone se pehle thoda body warm-up. Main boring corporate life mein ek moment ke liye bhi standout karna deserve karta hoon.”

Usne ek aur groovy move kiya, phir apni shirt straighten ki aur socha ki aaj woh unusually composed dikhega. Irony ka level tabhi peak ho gaya, jab uske laptop ne ek small notification pop ki—“Camera will turn on automatically when meeting starts.”

Aarav ne notice hi nahi kiya.

The Accidental Spotlight

Meeting on time start hui. Screen par pehle Neha Kapoor dikhi, neatly tied hair, crisp blue shirt, aur woh expression jo batata tha ki insan ne tea ke baad bhi patience maintain karni seekh li hai. Neha team lead thi, aur uski poori personality ek spreadsheet ki tarah structured thi.

Uske side mein Ritesh Malhotra the, senior manager, formal blazer, polite half-smile, aur woh tone jo hamesha aisa lagta tha jaise speech se pehle mentally press release draft kar liya ho. Ritesh ko image aur authority ka bohot khayal tha, especially jab upper management kabhi kabhi “just observing” mode mein hoti thi.

Neeche Pooja Singh ka tile tha, HR coordinator. Calm face, slight amused eyes, aur ek notebook open jo ya toh meeting notes ke liye tha ya phir office ke hidden reality show ke episode log karne ke liye.

Aarav meeting join karta hai. Usne mic check kiya, camera preview dekha, aur phir laptop ko side mein rakh diya. Woh soch raha tha ki abhi two minutes baaki hain, thoda aur dance kar leta hoon, phir proper professional mode mein aa jaunga.

Usne ek final dramatic spin liya.

Aur usi moment, screen par uska camera on ho gaya.

Aarav full dance mode mein tha. Ek haath hawa mein, doosra side mein, face par complete “main kisi aur dimension mein hoon” expression. Uska body language pure confidence ke saath move kar raha tha, jaise woh quarterly review nahi, talent show mein audition de raha ho.

Call mein ek second ki aisi silence chha gayi jo sirf office meetings mein possible hoti hai. Na kisi ne saans li, na keyboard click hua. Bas ek frozen, universal “oh no” moment.

Aarav ne screen dekhi.

Aur uska soul screen se thoda bahar nikal gaya.

Frozen Team Reaction

Neha ki aankhen widen ho gayin. Usne pehle screen ko dekha, phir Aarav ko, phir screen ko dubara. Uska face aisa tha jaise usne ek typo nahi, poora brand disaster dekh liya ho.

Ritesh ne apna throat clear kiya. Ek dum polished, ek dum dignified.

“Ah,” woh bola, “it seems… we have a small technical situation.”

Pooja ne apna mic mute hi rakha aur bas apni smile ko kaafi professional tareeke se dabaya. Uski aankhon mein woh sparkle tha jo batata tha ki usne office ka sabse entertaining moment accidentally capture kar liya hai.

Aarav ke liye time slow ho gaya. Usne apne haath awkwardly neeche kiye, phir ek half-turn liya jaise abhi bhi exit route dhoondh raha ho. Uska face tomato red ho chuka tha.

“Guys,” usne stammer karte hue bola, “woh—actually—main—”

Neha ne ek eyebrow raise ki. “Aarav, kya exactly ho raha hai?”

Aarav ne turant apne brain ka emergency excuse drawer khola. “Network issue. Haan. I mean, camera—uh—auto-on ho gaya. Aur main bas… stress relief exercise kar raha tha.”

“Stress relief exercise?” Neha ki tone mein disbelief aur mild irritation ka perfect blend tha. “Quarterly call se pehle dance practice?”

Aarav ne bechaini se nod kiya. “Ji. Corporate wellness. Thoda movement. Blood circulation. Productivity.”

Pooja ne apna mic mute hi rakha, lekin uske shoulders lightly shake hue. Woh laugh nahi kar rahi thi, bas internal buffering kar rahi thi.

Ritesh ne situation ko save karne ki कोशिश ki. “Well, to be fair, wellness is important. But perhaps… before meetings, let us ensure all settings are checked.”

Uski awaaz mein ek formal rescue mission tha. Jaise woh incident ko HR complaint banne se pehle policy document mein convert karna chahta ho.

Neha abhi bhi impressed nahi thi. “Aarav, next time camera aur mic settings pehle verify kar lena. Team call koi rehearsal space nahi hota.”

Aarav ne full shame mode mein “Absolutely, noted” bola. Lekin uske andar ek chhota sa voice tha jo keh raha tha: Bro, tu literally live meme ban gaya hai.

Damage Control Attempt

Call officially aage badh gayi, lekin Aarav ka dimaag abhi bhi ussi five-second clip mein phansa hua tha. Neha presentation continue kar rahi thi, sales numbers, pipeline, next quarter targets—sab kuch uske kaan se guzar raha tha. Ritesh occasionally “excellent point” aur “let’s align” bol rahe the. Pooja note-taking mode mein thi, but her expression was suspiciously amused.

Aarav ne apna camera off karne ki koshish ki, lekin tab tak damage already visible tha. Chat mein kuch log “Aarav, you okay?” type messages bhej rahe the. Kisi ne emoji bhej diya. Kisi ne “bro is vibing” likh diya.
