Team Outing

Team Outing

“Team outing ka naam sunte hi Aditi ko hamesha lagta tha jaise kisi ne uske dimaag par ek extra tab khol diya ho—aur woh tab loading pe hi atak gaya ho.”

Gurgaon ke Sector 44 wale office ke basement parking lot mein subah 8:15 baje ek white AC bus khadi thi. Uske side mein company ka logo chipka hua tha, aur neeche ek cardboard banner latak raha tha: “Bond Beyond Work!” Aditi ne us banner ko dekhkar almost sigh kiya, phir apna tote bag tight pakad liya. Usne black sneakers pehne the, jo uske hisaab se outing ke liye best थे—na zyada effort, na zyada expectations.

Parking lot mein log ek ajeeb mix mood mein the. Kuch genuinely excited, kuch forced smile ke saath, aur kuch bas isliye aaye the kyunki attendance ka screenshot HR group mein jaana tha. Rohan Bansal bus ke paas khade hokar sabko name-by-name greet kar raha tha, jaise election rally mein candidate ho. “Arre Aditi! Good morning! Ready for the fun?” usne itni energy se bola ki Aditi ko laga subah ka chai bhi thoda scared ho gaya hoga.

Aditi ne polite sa smile diya. “As ready as one can be,” she said.

Rohan ne is line ko bhi positive sign samajh liya. “Perfect! That’s the spirit!”

Thodi door Neha Sethi clipboard aur phone dono sambhale khadi thi. Usne light blue kurta pehna tha, aur uska expression woh wala tha jo HR logon ka hota hai—sweet, composed, aur andar se thoda panic. “Guys, please boarding jaldi kar lo, resort pe check-in ke baad first activity start ho jayegi,” usne announced kiya. “Aur haan, please apne seat belts pehle hi laga lena.”

Imran Khan last mein aaya. South Delhi se commute karke uska face already bol raha tha ki usne zindagi ke kuch choices par reconsideration kar liya hai. Usne bus ko dekha, phir Rohan ko, phir banner ko. “Bond beyond work,” usne dry tone mein bola, “matlab work ke baad bhi work hi?”

Rohan hans diya, shayad zyada zor se. Neha ne pretend kiya ki usne suna nahi. Aditi ko pehli baar subah thoda sa genuine amusement hua.

Bus ke andar Rohan front row se hi mic mode mein chala gaya—waise mic tha nahi, par uska volume usi level ka tha. “Okay team, today is not about hierarchy, not about deadlines, not about Slack pings. Today is about energy, connection, and spontaneous fun!”

Aditi window seat pe settle ho gayi. Gurgaon ki roads abhi traffic se fully jam nahi hui thi, isliye bus smooth chal rahi thi, but inside ka atmosphere already slightly suffocating tha. Random upbeat playlist start ho gayi—old Bollywood remixes, phir Punjabi tracks, phir ek embarrassing corporate anthem jo kisi ne office anniversary pe chalaya tha aur ab tak playlist mein zinda tha.

Rohan ne clap karte hue bola, “Come on guys, sing along!”

Kisi ne nahi kiya.

Usne phir bhi gaana aur loud kar diya, jaise volume badhane se participation bhi badh jaayegi. Aditi ne apne bag se water bottle nikali aur window ke bahar dekhne lagi. Noida ki taraf se ek aur bus aati dikhi, usmein bhi shayad koi aur team hogi, jo bilkul isi tarah pretend kar rahi hogi ki unka mood natural hai.

Imran ne earphones laga liye, lekin usne volume itna low rakha tha ki shayad uska music bhi uske sarcasm ki tarah half-available tha. Rohan uske paas jhuk kar bola, “Bro, thoda participate karo. We’re all in this together.”

Imran ne earphone ek side se हटाया. “I am participating. Main bus mein baitha hoon. Physical presence ka bhi kuch value hota hai.”

Aditi ki hansi almost nikal gayi, par usne turant control kar li. Rohan ne smile ki, like he appreciated the joke, but also like he was mentally noting that this was not the kind of enthusiasm he had planned.

Bus ke andar kuch icebreaker games start hue. “Two truths and a lie,” “guess the song,” “tell us your most embarrassing office moment.” Jis tarah gym membership lene ke baad log first day pe overdo karte hain, Rohan bhi outing ko overdo kar raha tha. Har 10 minute mein ek naya instruction, ek naya “guys come on,” ek naya “let’s make memories.”

Aditi ne sirf do baar bolna avoid kiya—actually, pura avoid kiya. She was not shy, exactly. She just had this habit of noticing everything: who was pretending to laugh, who was checking phone under the seat, who had already mentally left the bus even though physically present. Neha baar-baar dekh rahi thi ki sab engaged hain ya nahi. That made Aditi even more tired. It was like being observed by someone who was observing the observation itself.

Resort, ya more accurately Gurgaon ke outskirts mein ek “nature retreat” jo nature se zyada corporate package ki tarah lag raha tha, do ghante baad aaya. Fresh paint, artificial lawn, aur entrance pe wooden signboard: “Welcome to Serenity Hills.” Aditi ne signboard ko dekha aur socha, serenity ka actual location shayad parking mein hi chhoot gaya tha.

Check-in desk pe queue lag gayi. Neha har group ko split kar rahi thi: team A, team B, activity groups, lunch groups, photo groups. Uska tone polite tha, but Aditi ko clearly lag raha tha ki ye sab uske liye ek spreadsheet ka live version hai. Rohan idhar-udhar bhaag raha tha, “Guys, quick photo before you go! Wait wait, smile properly!”

Imran ne side mein khade hoke bola, “Office mein deadlines, outing mein photo deadlines. Company values consistency.”

Aditi ne is baar openly smile kiya. The smile was small, but real.

Unko ek hall mein bheja gaya jahan first activity start honi thi. Plastic chairs, projector, whiteboard pe marker se likha hua: “Know Your Team Better!” Neha ne excited voice mein bola, “Okay everyone, let’s begin with a fun icebreaker. Each person will share one fun fact about themselves, and then two truths and a lie.”

Aditi immediately internally resigned.

Rohan ne clap kiya. “Amazing! This is how bonding happens!”
