Misty Signal

Misty Signal

Andar Pritam ek corner mein baitha tha, notebook kholi hui, pen se page ke edge par kuch lines draw kar raha tha. Teacher ko dekhte hi woh uth gaya, jaise pakda gaya ho. Uski eyes mein khushi bhi thi aur guilt bhi. “Madam,” usne dheere se bola.

Sangeeta ne uske notebook par nazar daali. Page par English ke words neatly likhe the, aur side mein kuch EVS ke points. “Yeh tumne khud likhe?”

Pritam ne sir hila diya. “Raat ko… jab signal aata hai.”

Bhaben ne side se kaha, “Raat ko bhi? Subah ka kaam kaun karega phir?”

Pritam kuch bola nahi. Sangeeta ne tab notice kiya ki uske haath pe thode rough marks the, aur uska face thaka hua sa lag raha tha. “Tum kaam bhi karte ho?” usne poocha.

Pritam ne nazar jhuka li. “Haan madam. Chhote bhai ko bhi dekhna padta hai. Aur kabhi kabhi hill ke upar jaake network pakadta hoon.”

“Kaunsi hill?” Sangeeta ne surprise se poocha.

Pritam ne ek side ki chhoti path ki taraf ishara kiya. “Wahan ek rock hai. Thoda signal milta hai. Bas wahi pe audio clear hoti hai.”

Sangeeta ke andar kuch dheere se hil gaya. Yeh bachcha padhai se bhaag nahi raha tha. Woh padhai ko bachane ke liye mountain chadh raha tha. Usne us moment mein samjha ki jo usne “quiet student” samjha tha, woh asal mein quietly fighting student tha.

Usne Bhaben ki taraf dekha. “Aapko lagta hai yeh time waste kar raha hai. But sir, yeh bachcha har din effort kar raha hai.”

Bhaben ka jawline tight ho gaya. “Effort se kya hota hai madam? Kal ko iske kaam ka kya? Padh ke bhi yahin reh gaya toh?”

Sangeeta ne pehli baar usse lecture mode mein nahi, insaan ki tarah baat ki. “Aapka darr genuine hai. Main usse deny nahi kar rahi. Lekin aap yeh bhi dekhiye ki aaj agar yeh chhoot gaya, toh kal choices aur kam ho jayengi. Main promise nahi kar sakti ki life easy ho jayegi. But main itna kar sakti hoon ki yeh padhaai continue kare.”

Bhaben chup ho gaya. Uska expression ab bhi hard tha, but us hardness ke neeche crack dikhne laga tha. Usne Pritam ki taraf dekha. Pritam ne bhi pehli baar seedha apne father ko dekha. “Baba,” woh dheere se bola, “main kaam bhi karunga. Bas padhai mat chhodo.”

Yeh line simple thi, but usmein darr bahut tha. Sangeeta ne notice kiya ki Pritam ki awaaz kaanp rahi thi. Wo apne father ke saamne strong dikhna chahta tha, but andar se woh terrified tha ki kahin uska future bhi uske village ki boundary mein hi na simat jaaye.

Us raat Sangeeta ne laptop khol kar ek plan banaya. Rules ke andar rehkar bhi, thoda beyond rules. Pehle usne printed worksheets banwaye. Phir kuch short voice notes record kiye—English reading, EVS explanations, aur aasan instructions. Mrs. Dutta ko mail bheja, phir personally milkar समझाया ki sirf online attendance pe depend karna rural students ke liye unfair hai. Is baar usne emotion ke saath data bhi diya—network gaps, missed classes, and Pritam jaise students ki struggle. Mrs. Dutta pehle cautious rahi, but jab usne Sangeeta ka prepared folder dekha aur village realities ka structured note padha, toh unhone finally kaha, “Theek hai. Ek pilot basis pe try karte hain.”

“Pilot basis?” Sangeeta ne poocha.

“Matlab official records mein hum isko support initiative bolenge. But tumhe local coordination bhi karna hoga. Aur haan, attendance ka proper log maintain karna.”

Sangeeta smiled, but only slightly. “That I can do.”

Usne village ke ek local contact ke through ek community learning spot arrange kiya—ek small room jahan weekly signal comparatively better milta tha. Wahan ek borrowed charger, ek old speaker, aur kuch benches rakh diye gaye. Perfect nahi tha. Far from perfect. But it existed. Aur kabhi-kabhi existence hi first victory hoti hai.

Next week jab Pritam wahan aaya, woh pehle se zyada alert tha. Uske saath do aur chhote bachche bhi the, jo shayad pehli baar kisi teacher ke voice note ko dhyan se sun rahe the. Sangeeta ne laptop on kiya, aur network ne—jaise apni moodiness dikhane ke liye—pehle ek baar phir signal drop kiya. Room mein sabne ek saath saans roki. Phir ek line clear hui.

“Good morning, children…”

Bas itna hi kaafi tha.

Pritam ne pehli baar class mein khud haath uthaya. “Madam, can I answer?”

Sangeeta ne screen pe uska naam dekh kar smile ki. “Yes, Pritam. Please go ahead.”

Usne answer diya. Thoda hesitant, but clear. Phir second question pe usne aur confidence se bola. Third pe usne thoda sa smile bhi kiya. Sangeeta ko laga jaise uske andar ka woh dar, jo silently usko rok raha tha, ab thoda thoda pighal raha ho.

Class ke baad Bhaben wahan aaya. Uska face ab bhi serious tha, but eyes mein ek alag kind of attention thi. Usne room ke andar dekha, bachchon ko worksheets fill karte dekha, aur Pritam ko teacher se doubts poochte dekha. Koi drama nahi hua. Koi emotional background music nahi baj raha tha. Bas ek father tha jo apne bete ko seriously dekh raha tha, shayad pehli baar.

“Yeh sab sach mein hota hai?” Bhaben ne Sangeeta se poocha.

“Ji,” Sangeeta ne kaha. “Hota hai. Bas thoda jugad aur thoda patience lagta hai.”

Bhaben ne ek lambi saans li. “Theek hai. Din mein kaam karega. Shaam ko padhai. Lekin kaam bhi chhodenge nahi.”

Pritam ne turant head nod kiya. “Theek hai baba.”

Sangeeta ne un dono ko dekha. Yeh perfect ending nahi thi, aur na hi kisi miracle ka scene. Network ab bhi unreliable tha. Device ab bhi shared tha. Village ki reality ab bhi tough thi. But ab ek bachche ki padhai sirf luck par dependent nahi thi. Ab uske paas ek system tha—chhota, imperfect, but real.
