Friday Casual
Friday morning ka Gurugram alag hi mood me tha. Metro se utarte hi logon ke faces pe woh half-sleep, half-hustle wala expression tha, aur cyber office ke glass towers ke neeche coffee cups, laptop bags, aur urgent footsteps ka ek familiar Delhi-NCR orchestra chal raha tha. Riya Malhotra bhi usi crowd ka part thi, lekin uske andar Friday ka matlab sirf weekend ka promise nahi tha—Friday Casual ka verdict bhi hota tha.
Office ke turnstile se pehle hi usne apne reflection ko dark glass me ek baar dekha. Off-white linen shirt, high-waist trousers, clean white sneakers, aur hair ka woh “I woke up like this” kind of bun jo asal me 18 bobby pins aur 20 minutes ki mehnat se bana tha. “Simple lagna chahiye,” usne khud se bola, “but boring bilkul nahi.” Phir bhi uska second thought turant aaya: “Aur zyada try-hard bhi nahi.” Friday Casual ka sabse bada drama yahi tha—less effort ka illusion create karne ke liye sabse zyada effort.
Lift ke saamne already teen log khade the. Karan Sethi, same floor ka product manager, apni usual calm expression ke saath phone se nazar utha raha tha. Neha Bansal, HR wali, ek light blue dress aur tiny hoops me, aise smile kar rahi thi jaise usko sabki fashion anxiety ka secret pata ho. Aur Vikram Rana, senior sales lead, navy polo, beige chinos, expensive watch, aur woh expression jis se lagta tha ki usne casual word ko dictionary me kabhi respect se dekha hi nahi.
Lift aayi. Steel doors khule aur sab ek saath andar ghuse, jaise ek mini runway pe audition chal raha ho. Mirror-like walls me har kisi ka reflection alag story suna raha tha. Karan ne apne sleeve ka fold ek baar adjust kiya, jo “I don’t care” aur “I care enough” ke beech ka perfect corporate balance tha. Vikram ne apni watch ko aise angle kiya ki light us par pade, aur Neha ne bina kisi ko directly dekhte hue bola, “Aaj toh Friday energy kaafi strong lag rahi hai.”
“Energy ya wardrobe?” Vikram ne turant shot maara, half-smirk ke saath.
Neha hansi. “Dono, obviously. Office me Friday pe effort kam aur confidence zyada dikhna chahiye na.”
Riya ne apni lips press ki. Usko laga uska outfit safe hai, but safe ka matlab kabhi-kabhi invisible bhi hota tha. Karan ki shirt ka fabric dekh ke laga expensive hai, par loud nahi. Vikram ka look polished tha, but thoda too polished for casual Friday. Aur Neha—Neha hamesha aise comments karti thi jo innocent lagte the, par unke beech ek invisible scoreboard chhupa hota tha.
Lift ke mirror me sabne ek-do second ke liye apni apni image scan ki. Koi openly nahi dekh raha tha, par sab dekh rahe the. Yeh office culture ka sabse funny part tha—“I don’t care” ka pose sabse zyada care karne wale logon ka hota tha.
Reception cross karte hi coffee machine ke paas log jamne lage the. Friday ka ritual tha—pehle coffee, phir fake casual conversation, phir meetings me professional seriousness. Pantry me aaj unusually zyada people the, jaise sab ek doosre ke outfits ka audit karne aaye ho. Riya apna cup le rahi thi ki Neha ne casually, almost sweetly, bol diya, “Waise aaj sabne effort toh kiya hai.”
Riya ka haath ek second ke liye cup pe ruk gaya. “Sabne?” usne smile ke saath poocha.
Neha ne innocent face banaya. “Haan yaar, matlab Friday casual hai, but clearly nobody woke up and just threw on anything.”
Karan ne coffee stir karte hue halka sa laugh kiya. “That’s the point, isn’t it? Casual ka matlab random thodi hota hai.”
“Exactly,” Vikram bol pada, “casual me bhi class hoti hai. Kuch logon ko lagta hai sneakers pehen liye toh cool ho gaye.”
Riya ne apni eyes coffee cup ke rim pe focus kar di. Usne white sneakers pehene the, aur suddenly woh sneakers usko thode too visible lagne lage. Koi seedha insult nahi kar raha tha, par words ke beech comparison ka current chal raha tha. Friday Casual office ka fashion show nahi tha—emotional chess board tha.
Karan ne apni coffee ka sip liya aur ek faint smile ke saath bola, “Branding toh har cheez me hoti hai. Clothes, product, even personality.”
Vikram ne eyebrow raise ki. “Arre product manager ho, toh branding ka gyaan toh hoga hi. But some people still know how to carry themselves.”
Yeh line keh ke usne apne watch ko ek baar tap kiya, jaise watch nahi, status symbol ho. Riya ko laga Vikram ko apni loud confidence ka full subscription mila hua hai. Karan ne uski taraf ek calm look diya, jo dekhne me neutral tha, but uske andar ek tiny challenge zaroor tha. Riya samajh gayi—yeh sab adults ka fashion war hai, bas office language me wrapped.
Mid-morning team meeting me conference room ka AC itna thanda tha ki sab apne sleeves aur jackets ke saath thoda zyada conscious ho gaye. Riya presentation de rahi thi, lekin uska focus deck se zyada us moment pe tha jab koi uske outfit ko notice karega. Aur yeh bhi weirdly true tha ki jab usne apni slides confidently explain ki, toh usko apne clothes aur body language me ek invisible sync feel hua.
“Good point,” Karan ne bola, slightly nodding. “But can we make the messaging a little more premium?”
Premium. Riya ne internally ek sarcastic smile ki. Office me har cheez premium hi toh honi thi—messaging, coffee, presence, even casual Friday. Vikram ne side se bola, “Premium toh hona hi chahiye. Otherwise market me average cheezein already bahut hain.”
Riya ko laga statement uske deck ke liye tha, but tone me ek subtle flex bhi tha. Neha, jo meeting me notes le rahi thi, ne beech me ek gentle but sharp comment daala, “Honestly, aaj toh sabka vibe hi kaafi curated lag raha hai. Like nobody is actually casual.”
